A thought to begin with

An approximate birth time can make a dependable Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, house overlay or angle contact impossible to state when the possible times produce different results. It can also leave the Moon sign or a close Moon aspect unsettled near a boundary. The rest of the planetary picture is not automatically lost. Compare the supplied signs and degree contacts, test the earliest and latest plausible times, and rank only the contacts that survive. A guessed noon chart does not recover the missing horizon. If the comparison uses supplied Moon, Venus and Mars placements, it can discuss those placements directly, with optional degrees and a stated six-degree orb. It cannot calculate houses or a rising sign from birth details that were never supplied. The useful question is not whether the whole synastry is valid. It is which layer the time range can honestly carry.

The exact limit: what the clock controls

Synastry compares two horoscopes. It looks at the exchange between planets, angles and houses. Birth time controls the chart's local frame, so it controls some conclusions much more than others.

When the time is approximate, you may not be able to state one Ascendant, one Descendant, one Midheaven or one set of house overlays. You may also need to hold the Moon sign or a close Moon aspect open if the Moon crosses a sign or aspect boundary during the possible interval. Those are real limits. They don't erase every planet-to-planet contact.

Astrodienst describes the Ascendant as moving about one degree every four minutes on average, with the other house cusps moving with the chart's frame. Its synastry reference separates interaspects from planets falling in the other person's houses. That distinction gives us the clean starting point: ask whether the uncertainty changes the point itself, the house location, or only the exactness of an aspect.

The answer is narrower than 'you need an exact time for everything.' You need a reliable time for claims that depend on the horizon and house cusps. You need a range check for fast or boundary-sensitive placements. You can still read stable planetary signs and direct contacts when the supplied data supports them.

Start by measuring the time window

Approximate can mean five minutes, one hour, or an entire evening. Those are not interchangeable inputs. Write the earliest and latest plausible times before you interpret the chart.

A record that says 8:00 p.m. may mean the event was recorded to the nearest hour. A parent who remembers 'after dinner' gives you a wider range. Include the birthplace and the local time rule for the date, including daylight saving when it applied. Astrodienst notes that clock time must be converted with the correct time-zone information, so a neat-looking time with the wrong offset can shift the whole local frame.

Now ask what the range is wide enough to change. A ten-minute window may preserve the rising sign while moving its degree. A two-hour window may cross a rising-sign boundary. A date with the Moon near a sign change needs a separate lunar check even if the clock range looks modest.

This is the first useful decision. If the reader knows only 'morning,' do not spend the report pretending that a particular angle is settled. If the reader knows 6:12 to 6:18 a.m., test the edges and keep any result that stays put. Precision belongs to the input, not to the software's display.

The Ascendant and four angles need the strictest test

The Ascendant is the sign and degree rising on the eastern horizon at birth. The Descendant sits opposite it. The Midheaven and Imum Coeli complete the four main angles. Cafe Astrology defines the Ascendant as the cusp of the first house and ties it to the place and moment of birth.

These points matter in synastry because a partner's planet may contact an angle directly. Venus on the Descendant, Mars on the Ascendant or Saturn near the Midheaven can become a central interpretive thread. But an angle contact is only as firm as the angle degree behind it.

Test both edges of the time range. Record each angle's sign and degree. If the Ascendant changes from late Gemini to early Cancer, do not choose the sign that makes the story feel better. If the sign stays the same but a planet moves from a close conjunction to a wide one, lower the contact's rank instead.

A narrow exception matters. A birth time known within a few minutes, with the Ascendant safely away from a sign edge and no relevant planet near the moving degree, may support a useful angle reading. It still calls for a range check. 'Stable across the tested window' is the right claim. 'Exact because the record says 2:10' is not.

House overlays are locations, not replacements for aspects

A house overlay asks where one person's planet falls in the other person's chart. It gives the contact a life area: partnership, romance, home, work or shared resources. Astrodienst describes houses as a terrestrial frame, while the zodiac supplies the celestial frame. The house system and the birth time decide how that frame is divided.

If the time is uncertain, a planet near a cusp can move from one house to the next. A chart printed for noon may show a seventh-house Venus, but noon is only a placeholder unless someone actually knows the birth occurred then. The printed number does not repair the input.

Use three labels in a detailed report. Confirmed means the planet stays in that house throughout the tested window. Conditional means two house placements remain possible. Unavailable means the range is too broad to make a useful house claim. In a placement-only report, omit the house layer.

The aspect does not disappear because its house is unknown. A stable Venus-Saturn contact can still speak about affection and responsibility. The missing house leaves the setting open. That is a smaller reading, not an empty one.

The Moon is the moving personal-planet exception

The Moon deserves its own check. It travels quickly enough that its degree can change the reading over a few hours, and on a sign-change date the birth time may decide between two Moon signs. Honest Astrology gives the practical rule plainly: the Moon moves about half a degree per hour, while its sign is usually stable across a few hours unless a boundary is close.

Separate three questions. Does the Moon stay in one sign? Does its degree keep the same close contact? Does its house stay fixed? The answers can differ. A Moon may remain in Taurus while moving far enough from a partner's Mars to weaken a tight square. Or it may keep the aspect while its house changes.

Do not write 'the Moon is uncertain' and stop. Write the two possible Moon signs when the range crosses the boundary. If the sign holds but the aspect changes from four degrees to eight degrees, call the contact conditional under a six-degree orb. If it stays inside the orb at both edges, it can lead the interpretation.

The Moon is not a reason to reject every reading. It is a reason to stop treating one lunar degree as a fact when the clock does not establish it.

Use one orb and show when a contact moves

An aspect describes angular distance between two chart points. The orb is the distance from exactness that an astrologer allows. Astrodienst's Interaspect page recommends a smaller orb in synastry than in a natal chart because two charts produce more possible contacts and a wide list quickly becomes difficult to interpret.

This report uses a six-degree orb for selected major aspects. That number is a declared editorial rule, not a universal law. It lets the reader reproduce the comparison and see why a contact ranks as firm or conditional.

Suppose a supplied Venus is at 14 degrees Leo and a partner's Mars is at 19 degrees Aries. The five-degree trine remains inside the stated orb. If the uncertain person's Moon is supplied only as a range that moves a Moon-Mars square from five degrees to seven degrees, the Moon contact cannot carry the same weight. The arithmetic changes the rank before the interpretation begins.

Keep close contacts, not every possible contact. A shorter list makes the live pattern easier to see. It also prevents the familiar mistake of calling a wide, time-sensitive aspect the explanation for everything.

The stable core: signs and direct planetary contacts

Most planetary signs remain stable across a same-day time window, except when a planet is near its own sign boundary. The Sun, Venus, Mars and the slower planets usually give you a dependable sign layer. Mercury deserves a boundary check. The Moon always deserves the range check described above.

That stable layer can answer useful relationship questions. Venus compared with Mars can describe attraction and pace. Moon contacts can describe emotional response when the Moon's sign and degree hold. Sun and Saturn can show where warmth meets duty. These are interpretive themes, not a verdict about whether two people should date.

If exact degrees are supplied, compare the planet-to-planet contacts across the window. If only signs are known, keep the reading at sign level. Do not turn a shared element into a claimed conjunction, and do not infer houses from a sign list.

The ranking is simple: stable direct contacts first, stable sign patterns next, conditional contacts after them, and uncertain angles or houses outside the firm conclusion. The ranking tells you where to look. It does not turn astrology into a score.

A worked example: one window, three levels of confidence

Consider an example. Maria knows her birth time. Her partner's family remembers only that he was born between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. The date and place are known. She wants to understand why attraction feels easy while planning feels tense.

First, compare the supplied planetary signs and degrees. Suppose the Venus-Mars contact stays inside the six-degree orb at both edges of the two-hour window. Keep it in the leading interpretation. It gives the couple a language for desire, pursuit and pace.

Next, test the angle and houses at 6:00 and 8:00. If the Ascendant changes sign or the planets cross house cusps, remove one fixed rising sign and one fixed house overlay from the report. Those placements are not established by the information given.

Finally, check the Moon. Suppose it stays in one sign but its degree moves a Moon-Mars contact from five degrees to seven. The Moon-Mars story becomes conditional. It may sharpen the attraction-friction pattern, but it should not outrank the stable Venus-Mars contact.

Now the chart gives Maria a better question, not a prophecy. How does each person show desire? What makes a plan feel like care rather than pressure? The astrology remains specific because the input remains visible.

The strongest exception is a narrow, boundary-free range

A narrow range can preserve more detail than a broad one. If the known time is 2:12 p.m. with a possible error of two minutes, and no angle, cusp, Moon sign or relevant aspect sits near a boundary, the result may remain consistent across the tested times.

But minutes alone don't decide the matter. A five-minute range can still cross a sign edge when the Ascendant is late in a sign. A planet on a cusp can still change houses. What matters is whether the tested range crosses a boundary or moves the contact enough to change its rank.

If someone offers a rectified time, label it as a working hypothesis. Rectification compares possible times with life events, but it doesn't turn an uncertain record into an official one. Use the hypothesis to explore a question that genuinely needs houses or angles, then keep the result separate from recorded data.

This exception strengthens the method. The article is not saying that every approximate time is useless. It is saying that the chart earns detail by surviving the range.

The decision: keep the pattern, quarantine the frame

So what does an approximate birth time make impossible to conclude in synastry? It makes a changing Ascendant, angle, house overlay or boundary-sensitive Moon factor impossible to present as firm. It does not make every direct planetary comparison impossible.

Run the edges of the time window. Keep the contacts that remain. Mark the ones that change. Leave the frame out when the frame does not hold. Then choose one stable contact and turn it into a real question about affection, emotional care, desire, responsibility or pace.
